Criminals are now targeting outdoor sections of restaurants to steal people’s belongings. A customer at RocoMamas – a fast food chain – in Randburg, was a victim in late February.
Video footage shows a man walking into the restaurant – pretending to talk on his phone. While “on the phone” he wanders around until he spots an unsuspecting victim. With the a drop of a hat, the assailant grabs the victim’s phone and bolts.
Spokesperson for Randburg Police Station, Captain Makgowanyana Maja, said they had been notified about the incident at RocoMamas. “A case was opened and the matter is under investigation,” Maja told News24. He added that it was difficult to circumvent such incidents. “The best preventive measure is to be vigilant. When you are at stop sign, at taxi ranks or in a quiet street, avoid using your phones.”
