SONA so ver…

Today is again the annual SONA so what we want to investigate is the real state of our nation.
Resilience is the name of the game in South Africa so no doubt, the jokes about the SONA address will be doing the rounds before the sun rises in the morning and we take a break to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We’re holding on tightly to all the notable wins we’ve had lately, including the homecoming of Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi, the victory of the Proteas vs. England at Buffalo Park, and the historic tennis Match in Africa between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Trevor Noah and Bill Gates.
In general, South Africans are known for their quick wit so we can look forward to a frenzy of social media activity following the SONA address. We generally take things in our stride so as we sit by and wait for our imported goods to be released at customs following the global lock-down in the wake of the Coronavirus, we have time to scroll our social media pages and see what else is going on around us. It is time fellow South Africans to look up for a moment.
It’s no secret that 2019 was an annus horribilis, and that wasn’t restricted to the British royal family. We’ve started the new decade with Brexit, Mexit, a new pandemic from world’s largest exporter and our own domino effect of the parastatal collapse. It’s been an eventful and challenging period for business and today, five important issues will be up front and center on the global stage:

  • ESKOM and the devastating effect that rolling blackouts are having on the economy
  • Land Reform and Expropriation Without Compensation (EWC) will swing long-term investment sentiments
  • Corruption and the fight against crime
  • Coal-lapsing (oops) SOEs and the funding proposals that include using pension money to cover the debts
