Calls for death penalty following murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana

    September 4, 2019

After a 42-year-old man, who cannot be named until an identity parade is held, confessed to murdering and raping University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana, thousands of SA people have joined a petition in which they demand the return of the death penalty for the crimes committed against women.

On social media, many have flooded government Twitter pages to demand justice for women and children. According to SA’s history, the Constitutional Court banned the death penalty on June 6, 1995, on the grounds that the Criminal Procedure Act was in conflict with the country’s 1994 constitution.

300, 000 is the target number of signatures the petition has to rise and, by Tuesday morning, more than 256, 000 individuals had already signed it.

The civil initiative emerged after the details of Mrwetyana’s death had become public. It is known that the student was last seen at the Clareinch post office, where she was allegedly lured by the employee. Mrwetyana had allegedly been locked inside, where she was repeatedly beaten with a scale, raped and killed.

NPA Western Cape spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said in a statement to media: “She tried to fight back but he overpowered her and she lost her life. Later on, the court was told that he put her into his car and he drove out to Lingelethu in Khayelitsha and that’s where he left her body.”

The trial was postponed until November 5.

It is reported that, in two separate cases, the suspect was previously charged with armed robbery with aggravating circumstances and rape. But for the reason unknown, the rape charges were withdrawn.
