Man to appear in court for trying to throw his niece off the Steve Biko Bridge in East London

    October 7, 2020

A 30-year-old man who allegedly tried to throw his young niece off the Steve Biko Bridge on Monday will make his first court appearance in the East London Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

According to Red Alert Electronic Security EC, their teams were alerted to the scene just after 1 pm where they found the man dangling the one-year-old child over the bridge.

In a detailed account of the incident on the Red Alert Electronic Security EC FB page, Brett Harvey describes arriving on the scene of a man wanting to throw one-year-old girl off the bridge.

“At around 13h20 we were alerted by a member of the public that there was a man wanting to throw a one year girl off the walking bridge above Steve Biko Bridge. Our armed response team was dispatched and on arrival saw the man dangling the girl by her feet off the bridge wanting to throw her off. The suspect has been identified as her uncle. There were a lot of community members on the scene and they helped to distract the suspect, that’s when our officer, another family member, and the community grabbed the girl and the suspect ran. We rushed the girl to our ambulance where she was treated for minor injuries. The suspect was then threatening to jump off the cliff near the bridge but being cornered by SAPS, metro and fire department at the bottom trying to get him down and us on top. He came up the cliff and that’s when our officers managed to arrest him.  He was taken into custody by the SAPS and the child is safe.”
