The Smith Family more testimonialsTen people were reported dead after getting caught in a violent car crash involving a minibus taxi in Midrand on Sunday. Nine were declared dead on the scene while the tenth victim died on the way to the hospital, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed on Monday.
The accident occurred on N1 South, between Allandale off-ramp and the Buccleuch interchange in Johannesburg. It caused huge traffic delays as a part of the N1 had been shut down as the investigators tried to collect evidence and understand the cause of the crash.
According to the preliminary report and the pictures shared by Johannesburg Metro Police Department chief David Tembe, the minibus taxi is believed to have crashed into the concrete center barrier. Most of the vehicle’s roof had been cut off.
“The RTMC sends heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives, and friends of the deceased and wishes the injured a speedy recovery. We again reiterated our message that motorists should take responsibility and remain alert while on the roads at all times,” RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said.
Among the terrifying reports from the scene and despite all the horror of what happened on the N1, there is some good news: two people involved in the crash have survived, a 4-year-old child among them.
