A man suspected by the local residents of having shot and robbed a local shop owner was killed in an alleged mob justice attack in Soweto on Wednesday evening.
“A tuck shop owner in Mapetla, Soweto, was accosted by two unknown men. He was robbed at gunpoint of his cellphone, liquor and an undisclosed amount of cash on Wednesday evening,” Gauteng police spokesperson Brig Mathapelo Peters confirmed.
The two then supposedly killed the businessman by shooting him several times. The ambulance crew had done their best while on the road to hospital, yet the man died shortly after the arrival.
The Mapeta residents had then seized one of the suspects and set alight the alleged murderer and robber in front of everybody before the police arrived responding to the shooting incident.
The police recovered an unlicensed firearm with no serial number, a cellphone, and a wallet which had allegedly belonged to the tuck shop owner.
The second suspect is still on the run.Back to crime news
